Congratulations to our boy's teams that recently finished up their winter club season. Congratulations to our Lions Boys 14's for taking first place in their league and to All-stars Marko Kostich and Robert Watkins along with Stacy Stevens who was named best coach in the league. Good luck to all boys trying out for their high school teams.
Most teams will begin their travel season this month. We look forward to great competition and team development. Good luck to our teams attending the MEQ National qualifier this month!

Player of the Month
Sammie Brown is the February player of the month. Sammie is an outside hitter/setter on Lions 14-1's. Every Monday she attends setters/rightsides/outsides and defense when it doesn't conflict with the other positions. She comes early to set with setters, even though she plays outside this year. She's a setter at heart, but is playing outside for the benefit of her team. In addition to a strong attack, Sammie is a very consistent passer. She leads by example but is also a vocal leader on the court. She gives 100% and expects her teammates to do the same.

Coach of the Month
Mary Passananti has been chosen as the coach of the month for February. Mary started coaching for Lions Jrs. when the club was in its second year of existence and her daughter, Jenna, now our setter coach was in third grade. She has coached our fifth grade team, 11 Navy for MANY years. She is known for her great enthusiasm for the game and dedication to the young player. Many of our "studs" got their start on Mary's team where she not only taught them how to play the game, but how to love the game. In addition to Mary's time with her team, she volunteers as our picture lady and helps our photographer Bob with all of the picture taking, ordering and distribution of the team photos. If you see a large stuffed Lion on a team bench with a faded sweater, look for Mary to be close by. Thanks Mary and congratulations!

Ask the Coach
Q: How do officials determine which team serves first and which team has which side? When is this determined?

A: The official calls for a team captain 10 minutes before the match begins. The official chooses the captain from one team to call the coin toss. If the player wins the toss, she/he chooses 'serve or side'. If she/he chooses serve, that team serves first and gets the first 4 minutes on the court to warm up. The other team gets to choose the side their team starts on.
